Get your home ready for Winter

Get your home ready for Winter

With the scariest of all holidays just around the corner  and the nights drawing in, we thought we should put together some of things that get overlooked this time of year to ensure you don’t have any nasty surprises when the cold sets in.

  1. Clear your gutters and drains

This isn’t the most glamorous of jobs and it’s something that is often overlooked, but if to many Autumn leaves clog your gutter, you could end up with leaks and a hefty repair bill.

If you’re not confident doing this yourself it’s best to hire a professional, as ladders and heights aren’t for everyone.

2. Get your boiler serviced

Another easy to forget task is having your boiler looked over. It’s mostly rested over the summer aside from heating some water. It’s worth the small outlay of a plumber to ensure a reliable heating system throughout the winter.

It could also save you some money as after the boiler has been serviced it’s usually more efficient, remember, every little helps!

You can expect to pay around £80 depending on what kind of system you have.

3. Protect your pipes

When water freezes it can damage pipework and cause leaks, if you’re not using your outside tap for example turn it off from the stopcock inside the house. It’s usually under the sink!

4. Insulate your doors and windows

This is especially true if you have a wooden or composite door, as wood expands when water gets into it and retracts when it dries. This could leave small gaps around the edges of the door, fine in summer, but not so nice when the frost sets in.

5. Make sure you’re on the best energy deal

This can make a huge difference, over the course of a year. Remember to shop around once your fixed tariff comes to an end, but this is even more important as the winter draws in and you require more energy. Some people report savings of over £250 per year, so it’s worth a couple of hours on the internet.

6. Leave your grass longer

Grass can be damaged by frost and cold weather. It’s a good idea to leave it a little longer to ensure it’s thick and healthy for Spring next year.

Now is also a good time to aerate your lawn, fertilise and over seed. This will leave you in good stead for next year and your grass will be the envy of the street!
